I was in college in a small town when Reagan came through. Typically, every pickup had a rifle in the back window. You could do that there and then. Allegedly, the Secret Service told the President it would be difficult to protect him. His response was- "where else could I be more secure?"

Remember, Reagan didn't get shot because he was hated. He got shot because a man was obsessed with a girl.
